How to Land a Career in IT

Posted By: Hayden Beck on February 21, 2017

So, you’re ready to launch your career in IT, but do you know where to begin? Starting a new career is always a little daunting, especially in IT since there are so many different types of jobs available. Here are 5 tips for beginning the IT career of your dreams.

1. Resume or Curriculum Vitae: Which is Best?

First impressions are everything, and the first impression you’ll make on a potential employer is through your resume or curriculum vitae (CV). Take the time to determine which of these two formats helps you best present yourself, your experience, and your accomplishments, then make sure you do a thorough job making yourself look good without over-embellishing. Double check your resume or CV for spelling and grammatical errors prior to submission to make sure your first impression is a good one.

2. Networking is Key

Never underestimate the power of networking. Get yourself out there in every way possible and make sure everyone you meet leaves the conversation knowing who you are and where your career goals lie. You never know who you might come in contact with—it may be someone in charge of the hiring for a tech company, or someone who has connections within the IT field. These days, it truly is all about who you know.

3.

Determining the Best IT Degree

Another excellent way to build your experience and set yourself up for networking opportunities is to earn your degree in IT. There are several degrees available from a variety of reputable colleges and universities that will not only allow you to gain more knowledge in your desired field, but also meet people who can help you get started in your career.

4. Use Social Media Platforms

There are many social media platforms available today that can help you link up with people who share your career goals, or even put you in contact with potential employers. LinkedIn has been referred to as one of the greatest networking tools available, so setting up a profile is a no-brainer. You can use LinkedIn to connect with people you met at school, new colleagues, and industry experts who you may be interested in having as a mentor. As with your resume, it’s crucial to have a well-polished LinkedIn profile.

5. Earn Pertinent Certification

Especially in the IT field, certifications are essential. Do research to determine the most pertinent certifications you’ll need for the job you desire. Even after you’ve started your career, make sure you keep on top of the renewal schedule to prevent any lapses. Earning these certifications is the only way you’ll stay relevant in your chosen field. It also offers yet another excellent way to network and meet people in your field, and continue your education so you can stay on top of new trends in tech.
