Alabama State University Business Students Win Top Honors at National Conference

Alabama State University Business Students Win Top Honors at National Conference
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 22, 2017

A team of students from Alabama State University's College of Business Administration (COBA) took home top honors and more than $2,000 in prize money during the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse Leadership Diversity Competition.

The team, named "The Stingers," placed third in competition and was awarded $2,000 for their research and business solution plan for the Tempur-Pedic Company.

“We stayed up over 26 hours researching our company, creating a unique idea, allocating a $1,000,000 budget and preparing a professional PowerPoint presentation,” said ASU student and team captain, Breana Rucker.

Rucker, a junior majoring in business management, and team member Zaria Strayhorn, a junior majoring in accounting, also received individual awards.

“I was honored when they announced that I had won The Best Presenter Award because there were so many other amazing speakers in the competition,” Rucker said.

Strayhorn was also the recipient of the Social Media Award, which was valued at $75.

“When I won The Social Media Award, I was really excited; however, I did not take all the credit for this award,” Strayhorn said.

“I would like to give credit to both ASU teams as it was a collaborative effort. As a result, we all agreed to donate the reward money to ASU's COBA.”

Rounding out the Stingers team is Jasmine Frazier, a junior majoring in accounting.
ASU students also fielded a team named "The Hornets Nest," which was comprised of team captain Nkemakunam Obata, and members Taron Wright and Tyrell Hart. The ASU team advisors were Dr. Edward Brown and Dr. Deshannon McDonald, who also accompanied the students to the competition.

The ASU teams competed against six other teams from across the United States.
The purpose of the annual competition is to challenge teams to analyze a business case and present recommendations to a panel of executives for a chance at winning cash awards. It is open to a select number of students and undergraduate institutions and provides an opportunity for students to transfer classroom instruction into solving real-world business problems.
