Melissa Essential Oil: Uses, Benefits and Precautions

Melissa Essential Oil: Uses, Benefits and Precautions
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on March 06, 2017

Melissa essential oil (Melissa officinalis, or its common name, lemon balm) is actually from the mint family and steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of the plant. It's definitely one of the pricier oils, has a gentle lemony aroma, and some pretty amazing properties. It's most often used for skin-related issues, as well as viral issues and emotional support.

Primary Benefits

•Supports a healthy immune system
•Calms tension and nerves
•Soothes occasional stomach discomfort

Emotional Benefits

It is also said to support a person through spiritual awakening. Like citrus oils, its citrus-like aroma is uplifting to the mind and energy, but it's especially uplifting to the soul, said to support a person in remembering Who They Are and why they are here. I see this oil as a good one for those "dark nights of the soul", when we're in the depths of hopelessness or self-doubt, feeling desperate or unable to go forward. Melissa essential oil can open us up to the potential of joy, teaching us how to allow it to flow through us and our life again (especially when that seems like a pipe dream). It lifts us up out of those dark places and back into light and hope.

Complimentary Oils

Melissa essential oil blends well with Geranium, Lavender, and Citrus oils. In addition to Melissa essential oil, also consider trying Bergamot or Wild Orange for a similar aroma, or Melaleuca, Oregano, or Thyme for similar health benefits.

How to Use Melissa Essential Oil

Traditionally, melissa essential oil uses these application guidelines. Click the banner to understand what each symbol means and to learn how each is used safely and effectively:

Precautions of Melissa Essential Oil

Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose.

Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended by its maker.

Popular Uses of Melissa Essential Oil

•Add 1–2 drops to herbal tea to soothe indigestion or lessen nausea.
•Diffuse at night or rub on forehead, shoulders, or chest to lessen stress and promote emotional well-being.
•Place 1–2 drops under the tongue to boost immunity.
•Add to moisturizer or a spray bottle with water and spritz on face to rejuvenate skin and refresh the mind.
•Dab a small amount on breakouts or minor irritations on the lips or skin to soothe the area.

Inspiration for Using Melissa Essential Oil

Melissa Bug Spray: Fill spray bottle with witch hazel then add 10 drops Melissa and 5 drops Basil, shake and spray on for full bug protection.

Repairing Lip Balm: Combine 2 tbsp of oil with 1 tbsp of beeswax along with 8 drops of Peppermint and 8 drops Melissa. Heat until combined (double boiler works best) and use when cool.

Restorative Skin Cream: Combine 1/2 cup shea butter and coconut oil with 1tsp honey heat until combined. Stir in one cool 40 drops Peppermint along with 20 drops Melissa.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON QUALITY

Not all oils are created equal. Because of a lack of industry standards and a lack of regulation on terms such as "natural" or "pure", much of what you find at the drug store is NOT a therapeutic grade of essential oil and may lack real quality or even contain contaminants or adulterants (way more common than you'd think).

A LOT goes into creating a high quality essential oil. A good brand should follow these guidelines:
•Proper plant varieties
•Each plant grown indigenously for the healthiest plant
•Grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc
•Harvested with precise timing to ensure peak properties
•Extracted with proper temp and pressure to preserve oil molecules
•Third-party testing of every batch
•Stand behind the internal use of their oils
