Morehouse Debate Team Takes State Title Again, Ranked Third In Nation
|
Posted By: Legasaurus Sister on March 08, 2017 Championship-winning debate coach Ken Newby recently delivered another first-place trophy to the Office of the Morehouse College president to share news of the team’s latest state victory. Morehouse College’s debate team is one of the finest in the state. The scholars triumphed at the GPDA State Finals in mid-February after soundly defeating some of Georgia’s top debaters. Morehouse’s debaters have out-performed teams representing such colleges as Georgia Tech, Valdosta State, and the University of Georgia. Newby shared the GPDA state trophy with Dr. John S. Wilson before placing it in a prominent place in the office. The award is more than three-feet-tall. “There is no debate as to what place we won,” Dr. Wilson said after holding the trophy triumphantly. Morehouse has won the state title for the last three consecutive years, Newby said. “We are ranked third in the nation.” The team currently competes on the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) circuit and the British Parliamentary, or Worlds, circuit. Morehouse’s debaters will now prepare for a tournament that will pit them against top teams in the nation and the world. They are scheduled to compete at the Pan-American University Debating Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. from March 10-12.
