Hypnotic Brass Ensemble to perform March 30 at Cheyney University for final Arts & Lectures Series event this Academic Year

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE) will perform Thursday, March 30, as part of Cheyney University’s Arts & Lectures Series. The 7 pm performance in Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium on the historic campus is open to the public. Tickets are available via Ticker Leap (https://cu-arts-and-lectures-series.ticketleap.com/hypnotic-brass-ensemble/dates/Mar-30-2017_at_0700PM )

HBE, a family band comprised of seven blood brothers, began their musical training at the tender ages of four and five by their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran, co-founder of AACM, Sun Ra's lead trumpeter, and mentor to "the Pharoah's", later known as " Earth Wind and Fire”. In 1990, the boys formed the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble and began touring the US performing complex original written jazz compositions of Cohran and other greats such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and even the music of classical greats Bach & Beethoven.

Adapting to their own generation of hip-hop, rock, and reggae, to name a few, the group formed their own band, HBE, in 1999.

In 2001, after releasing their first independently cut LP, for which they received an American Author’s Award, they found success at the grass roots level. Their careers have taken off over time.
Tickets to hear HBE's musical style which ranges from hip-hop to jazz to funk and rock, including calypso and gypsie music, cost $25 for the general public. Cheyney University students, faculty and staff get in free with their univerisity photo ID.

HBE is the final Arts & Lectures Series event of the 2016-17 Academic Year. The Arts and Lectures Series provides an array of programs for the Cheyney University community and campus guests. The series is intended to further enrich the cultural experience on campus. The Arts and Lectures Series is sponsored by a Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Title III) grant. For more information, contact Sharon Cannon at 610-399-2057.
