4 Tech Skills You Need to Learn Before Leaving College & Getting a Career

4 Tech Skills You Need to Learn Before Leaving College & Getting a Career
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on March 10, 2017

In today's economy, tech skills are some of the most valuable and in-demand assets an employee can possibly have. When embarking on a career, it's important that you have at least some familiarity with the technology that allows most modern businesses to operate the way they do. Here are four tech skills you should learn before you graduate from college.

3D Design

One of the most exciting new areas of technological development is the world of 3D printing. Modern 3D printers can create objects out of raw material using only a digital design. These printers are rapidly getting small and affordable enough to find their way into home use by ordinary people. Accompanying the development of printers has also been a series of developments in the materials that can be used in them to create objects. To power this growing industry, an ever-larger workforce of 3D design experts is needed, making this a growth skill that could have market potential for years to come.

At Least One Computer Language

Today, there are too many computer languages for most people to become proficient in all of them. Everyone working in any tech-related industry, however, should have a thorough command of at least one. Perennial favorites include C++, SQL, JavaScript and Python. Another widely-selected language at the moment is R, due to the fact that the rapidly growing data science industry uses it almost exclusively for data cleaning, modeling and interpretation. If this is something that interests you, then you might want to consider picking up SQL course or another class for a different language. Most colleges typically offer some academic instruction in coding.

Web Development

If you want to put your tech skills to their highest use in your career, web development is the direction to take.

With new websites starting every day and old ones needing regular updating to stay relevant and useful, web development skills are in extremely high demand. Best of all, if you already know HTML and a versatile programming language, such as JavaScript, then picking up skills as a web developer will be relatively easy for you.

If you plan to learn web development, it's useful to learn two different aspects of it. The first, known as front-end development, deals with the elements of the site that users and administrators see. The second, back-end development, involves the relation of the website to the servers on which it is hosted. Ideally, those who plan to work with website development should learn both of these elements of the overall development process. By doing so, you will become what is known as a full-stack developer. Developers of this type are in higher demand because they can handle entire development projects on their own and typically command higher salaries than either their front-end or back-end counterparts.

Basic Electronics

Aside from simply knowing how software works, a grounding in hardware can be a great asset in many industries. You don't need to be an expert, but a few classes in rudimentary electronics or electrical engineering will give you most of the knowledge you need to solve common hardware issues. If possible, you may also want to explore hardware that is specific to the career field you plan to enter. Understanding the workings of the equipment you will eventually be around every day can be a very useful thing when you begin applying for jobs.

If you want to enhance your economic value in the modern job market, a good set of tech skills is absolutely essential. Learning technology-based job skills will give you an edge in almost any industry you may choose to go into. It will also prove useful to you in your day-to-day life, as technology is only projected to advance from this point forward.
