4 Keys to Getting Through Grad School with Minimal Debt

4 Keys to Getting Through Grad School with Minimal Debt
Posted By: Anica Oaks on April 05, 2017

An education can pave the way for success in life. Unfortunately, a typical education costs money and can leave a person in debt years after having received their degree. If the goal is to get through grad school with a minimal amount of debt, there are four methods to consider.

Consider Programs That Offer Research or Teaching Assistant Positions

There are such programs but they are likely not well advertised. Private and public schools are likely to offer them. Students may be able to conduct research or teach classes in exchange for full or partial tuition. Some schools may also offer a stipend. PhD and master’s degree programs may be available in a number of disciplines. If you want minimal post-college debt, shooting for a TA position, fellowship, or research position is absolutely critical. You could potentially get your entire tuition waived, in addition to a stipend.

Consider Applying to Wealthier Schools

Some students choose to apply to schools in states with strong economies. They also consider a school’s endowment offerings. These are schools that have weathered financial storms and can better fund master’s and PhD programs. Of course, funding is typically merit-based. Students still need impressive grades and test scores to make the cut.

Regardless of whether a student pursues online learning in athletics or a classic MBA program, their essays should be well written about the area of research they plan to pursue.

Plan for a Career That Offers Long-Term Employment Possibilities

One can never place enough emphasis on the importance of career and salary prospects. This is essential before spending money and valuable time in a degree program that may off very little ROI. Also think in terms of globalization and the fact that it has never been easier to partner with people on the other side of the globe. People from around the world are always looking to connect with professionals in the United States.

Choose a Grad Degree That Makes Sense

An article by Time magazine discusses scenarios where a graduate degree will clearly put a person ahead. Some employers use graduate degrees as a screening device. Then of course there are career disciplines that require graduate study. Research on the student’s end is critical. There are some graduate degrees that have little impact over average earnings. These fields may include healthcare therapist, writer, editor, and architect to name a few.

A graduate degree can add about $1 million dollars or more to a person’s financial portfolio over a lifetime. Where that person works, raises a family, and plays over time may depend on their education. An education provides access and a way up.
