4 Great Degrees to Help Minority Students Break Into Politics

In order to take advantage of these openings, it helps to choose the right college and degree. Many colleges offer scholarships and financial aid packages to help minorities get a good education. If you’re looking for the best degree to get into politics, the following are four of the best choices. Political ScienceIf you want to gain a solid background in politics, a degree in political science is a good place to start. You can specialize in certain areas such as American, European or Asian politics. This is a major you can also combine with another field, such as law, economics or history. If your goal is to enter politics, you could also look for a government internship during your summer breaks or after graduation. Public AdministrationA degree in public administration teaches you the nuts and bolts of how government works. This is helpful training and qualifies you to apply for jobs with government agencies or to run for office. You’ll cover topics such as budgeting, creating policies and programs, financial administration and more. This type of degree also gives you the possibility to work for non-profit organizations. DiplomacyIf you love to travel and want to be involved in high-level political and economic negotiations between nations, diplomacy is a career worth considering. Diplomats are well paid and enjoy many perks and privileges, such as free travel and accommodations. There are many solid diplomacy graduate programs to help prepare you for this career, such as a Master of Arts in Diplomacy. EconomicsThe fields of politics and economics are closely related. A large portion of what politicians focus on has to do with the economy, whether at the local, state, national or global level. Studying economics will give you a background in the various economic theories of the past and present. It will teach you about the effects of inflation, interest rates, unemployment rates and other crucial factors. This is another relevant degree to help you prepare for a political career. Minority students today have more choices than ever before. Research a variety of schools and degree programs, as well as your many financial aid options. It’s also helpful to study the careers of people in office whom you admire. Looking at their backgrounds and the degrees they chose can give you ideas for your own education.
