Moving Away for the First Time? 5 Ways to Avoid Problems
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on April 19, 2017 Moving away from home for the first time can be one of the scariest and most stressful experiences of your life. On the other hand, the sense of freedom and independence and the exhilarating thrill of having a space all your own is not to be understated either. If you're preparing to move away from home for the first time to attend college, utilize these five ways to avoid problems. 1. Plan Your Layout In AdvanceIf you've already seen the dorm or apartment you'll be living in, you should be able to more easily start planning how you're going to organize and decorate your new space. Measure any spaces as well as furniture you plan on bringing to make sure they will fit, and draw up a diagram visualizing where everything will go and what your space will look like. That way you won't arrive and suddenly realize something big you brought simply won't fit. 2. Understand Your LeaseWhether it's through the college or you'll have a private landlord, it's always critical to understand what your duties and responsibilities as a tenant are as well as those of your landlord. For example, what kind of deposits do they require, and what is and is not okay to do to the space while you're living there? What are the complex or dorm's rules and regulations? 3. Try and find out in advance whether your new dorm or apartment offers some kind of storage facility, especially in regard to things like bicycles. This will further help you plan how much stuff you can bring or accumulate and where you'll be able to store it. 4. Hire a Moving CompanyIf you're going to be moving into and furnishing an entire apartment, or even if you'll have enough room in your dorm room for a decent amount of your furniture and personal effects, consider hiring a moving company like Bekins Van Lines Inc for a smoother transition and peace of mind. This can prevent injury to you and anyone else helping you move, as well as ensure none of your things are broken or damaged during the move. 5. Take Care of YourselfMoving to a new apartment or dorm, leaving home and suddenly being thrust into the overwhelming college environment can take a toll on your mental health. It should be unsurprising that mental health issues are heavily associated with transitioning from high school to college, whether they develop during this time or are exacerbated by the stressful change. So take care of yourself and seek help should you need it. Planning ahead is key to avoiding problems when moving away from home for the first time, whether it's reading your lease carefully or measuring to make sure your furniture will fit. Follow these five tips to avoid problems so you can spend your first few days at college socializing, getting settled and preparing to have the time of your life.
