ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- Brandon Marsonek set an Alabama A&M pitching record Friday but the Bulldogs lost 5-3 to Mississippi Valley State.
Marsonek faced six batters Friday and struck out four to run his total to 91 this season, breaking the record of 89 he set last season. His career number of 180 is also a school record.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brandon Whitaker reached first on an error to lead off the inning. One out later with Whitaker on second, Zeth Malcom was hit by a pitch and then Carson McGregory singled to load the bases.
Njike Hunter singled to bring home Whitaker and Malcom for the 2-0 lead.
The Delta Devils, however, answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning for a 2-2 tie. They took the lead with a run in the fourth inning and increased the score to 4-2 with another run in the fifth.
Dalton Mitchell led off the A&M seventh with a single and later stole second base with one out.
Malcom doubled to score Mitchell and cut the MVSU lead to 4-3. But he was left stranded at second as the inning ended.
Malcom, McGregory and Mitchell each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs, 5-11, are tied with Alcorn State, 5-11, for third in the SWAC Eastern Division standings, a game-and-a-half ahead of Mississippi Valley, 5-14.
A&M and Valley play Saturday at 3 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
