Men's Track Places Second at CIAA Championships

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on April 24, 2017 The Virginia Union University men's track and field team took second place at the 2017 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Conference Championship, held on April 21-22 at Bowie State University in Bowie, Md. Saint. Augustine won the CIAA Championship for the 20th straight year, scoring 174.5 points to Virginia Union's 126.5. In third was Virginia State (105) in the men's events, Johnson C. Smith was fourth (100) followed by Bowie State (61), Lincoln (Pa.) (50) and Livingstone (24). This was the third straight year that VUU finished second to Saint Augustine's. Individual CIAA Championship titles were earned by Luis Nieves in the 5,000 meter run, where he defended his 2016 title, by Shareef Gardner in the pole vault, and by Justin Hunter in the 100 meter dash. All-Conference honors were also earned by freshman Darius Whitehurst who placed 3rd in the men's shot put, freshman Josh Butler who placed 3rd in the discus, Arthur Casey who placed 3rd in the 5,000 meter run, Hunter in the 200 meter dash, and Nieves who additionally placed 2nd in the 1500m and 3rd in the 800 meter run. The men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams of Hunter, freshman Iyon Oravitz, junior Jordan Bolden, and freshman Devin Simon additionally earned All-Conference honors with 3rd place finishes in both relays. Also earning points in the top 8 of their respective events were junior Tyrel Harrison in the 400 meter hurdles, junior Chazton McKenzie in high jump and long jump, Whitehurst in discus, Butler in shot put and javelin, Simon in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, Oravtiz in the 400 meter dash and javelin, Casey in the 800 meter run, freshman Jordan Fountain in the 800, 1500 and 5,000, freshman Charles Whitehead-Tillery in the 1500 and 5000 meter run and senior Artneil Reid in javelin. http://vuusports.com/news/2017/4/22/mens-t...
