Gold Team defeats Maroon Team, 20-10

Gold Team defeats Maroon Team, 20-10
Posted By: Elynor Moss on April 24, 2017

The Gold Team came out victorious by a score of 20-10 on Saturday, April 22, in the 2017 edition of the Bethune-Cookman Football Maroon and Gold Spring Showcase housed at Municipal Stadium.

Redshirt junior quarterback Larry Brihm Jr. threw for a game-high 185 yards, connecting on 12-of-17 passing to lead the Gold Team to the victory.

Gold set the tone early-on with a five-play, 53-yard drive capped off by a Uriel Hernandez field goal just over two minutes into the contest. The drive was opened with Brihm connecting on a 45-yard pass play with receiver Steffon Francois. Hernandez capped it off with a 26-yard field goal to put Gold on top, 3-0.

The Maroon Team tied things up on its first possession of the second quarter.

Gold quarterback junior Anthony Cruz was intercepted by Maroon's Arthur Williams, returning it 22 yards down to the Gold six yard line. However, Maroon quarterback Akevious Williams, a redshirt freshman from Madison County High, was sacked by Gold's Todney Evans on third down, forcing a 47-yard field goal from Hernandez – kicking for both teams on the afternoon.

The kick was good, allowing the score to be tied, 3-3 with 11:28 remaining in the first half.

The first half was played with a regular clock, while the second used a running clock.

The Gold Team stepped back out in front on its next possession of the second quarter.

Brihm helped march the squad 75 yards down the field on eight plays, capped off by a Jawill Davis touchdown reception in the right corner of the end zone off the touch from Brihm. The extra point from Hernandez was good to put Gold back up, 10-3.

During the touchdown scoring drive, Brihm connected with Francois for 16 yards, as well as Reshard Green for 20 yards to put the Gold Team in business inside the Maroon red zone. The Davis touchdown reception occurred two plays later.

Just before the half, Anthony Cruz connected with Francois for his longest hookup of the afternoon, a 54-yard pass to put the Gold squad at the Maroon 11 yard line. Uriel Hernandez added a 24-yard field goal as time expired to extend the Gold lead, 13-3.

The teams traded defensive efforts in the third quarter, as the Gold squad continued to hold a 13-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

The first possession of the fourth quarter saw the Gold Team increase its lead, 20-3.

Brihm connected with Cameron Rigby for 11 yards, allowing the Gold Team first and goal at the Maroon one yard line to start the fourth stanza. Three plays later, junior running back Jamaruz Thompkins scampered in from two yards out for the game's first rushing score of the afternoon. The extra point from Hernandez was good.

Maroon produced the ultimate 20-10 ending score on the final possession of the game.

Alfred Adams rushed up the middle on a direct-snap, heading 85 yards down to the Gold six yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Akevious Williams would later find running back Tupac Isme for an 11-yard reception in the back of the end zone, later adding the extra point from Hernandez.

Adams led the game with 83 yards rushing on nine carries for the Maroon Team. Marcus Levy led the Gold squad with 21 yards on nine carries of his own.

Brihm's 185 yards passing and one touchdown was a game high for the Gold squad, while Williams finished 7-for-20 with 51 yards and a touchdown for Maroon.

Francois finished the game with 115 yards receiving on three catches, while teammates Davis (52 yards) and Jordan Rivers (49 yards) each collected four catches a piece for the Gold Team. Jesse Thomas had three receptions for 35 yards on the Maroon side of things.

The punting duties were handled on both sides by Javaunie Francis, averaging 44.6 yards per kick on the Maroon efforts, while using 36.3 yards per kick on the Gold side.

The 2017 Bethune-Cookman Football schedule features three non-conference contests, including two against BCS (Bowl Championship Series) opponents. Another game features a perennial FCS power and top 25 opponent. Of the 11 games, seven will take place in the Sunshine State, with four games played inside Municipal Stadium aka The Cage.
