ACTING AG CHRIS MCCOOL ANNOUNCES CLOSING OF INVESTIGATION INTO ASU
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 03, 2017

Greetings Fellow Hornets:

It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I share with you today the announcement from the Alabama Attorney General's Office that the Special Grand Jury's investigation into alleged wrongdoing at Alabama State University is over with no indictments or any action "on any allegation."

Our University has been under a great cloud for nearly six years because of this investigation that was instigated by former Governor Robert Bentley. ASU officials said from the beginning that there was no merit to the allegations, but the University's protestations were dismissed. Now, those former University officials who bore the brunt of the fallout from the preliminary report by FSS, as well as the University itself, have been vindicated.

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief that years of costly investigations, including the empanelment of several grand juries, resulted in today's conclusion by Acting Attorney General Chris McCool that..."After evaluating the evidence, the special grand jury declined to act on any allegation."

As you all know, this investigation has adversely affected the University's reputation and enrollment, has compromised our recruitment of students and employees, has cost the University millions of dollars to defend and has endangered our bond rating and accreditation. It will take us years to regain what was lost, but we will do it. Now that the Special Grand Jury has reported out in our favor, Alabama State University can finally continue with our mission of providing excellence in education for our students without the hanging cloud of an ongoing investigation.

As we celebrate our sesquicentennial, we can also celebrate our emancipation from the entanglement of the bondage brought on by the rumors and innuendo that have plagued this great University for the past six years. We appreciate those of you who never wavered in your support of O' Mother Dear. We are still standing "Marion Strong" because of you.

The University's Board of Trustees and administration are focused on the future of Alabama State University. With your support, we can "Rebuild and Restore Together" as we press toward the mark of our calling of educational excellence for the students that we serve.

Our declaration of unity remains, "It's a Great Time to Be a Hornet!"

Sincerely,

Leon C. Wilson

Interim President, Alabama State University
