My life is based on a true story - Columbia, Temple and Lincoln Universities…

My life is based on a true story - Columbia, Temple and Lincoln Universities…

I am steep in my family’s African to African American Heritage; fore I am the reason why they existed.

I was once asked by Dr. Charles Jones, Vice President of Freshman Education at Medgar Evers College, for all I do on behalf of our race of people, what did I expect in return?

Without hesitation I said, I simply want it known that my family and I were here.

Toni Morrison, my Howard University English Literature Professor and Neighbor in New York for many years, once said,

“True adulthood… is a difficult beauty, an intensely hard won glory, which commercial forces and cultural vapidity should not be permitted to deprive you of.”

One of my mentors, the late Gordon Parks once advised me, “If you don’t have anything to say, your photography won’t say much”

It is that respect, I don’t leave my work to be interpreted by others – I speak of the who, what, where and why of my photography.

If there is any interpretation by others, its only comes after I’ve interpreted my work.

I am proud to announce that I will begin the process of archiving my life’s work at Temple University’s Charles L. Blockson African American Collection Library.

Next will be At Columbia University in New York.

I always said, if I didn’t go to Howard University, I would have gone to Columbia University.

I don’t care what those people on the upper west side of Manhattan say; Columbia University is in my beloved Harlem.

I selected both Temple and Columbia Universities because they both represented colleges that produce potentially elite leaders, instead of choosing colleges that are labeled elite, such as “Poison Ivy League” Universities which produce whatever…

Last but not least, will be Lincoln University in Jefferson City Missouri an History Black College and University (HBCU).

As I am an African American veteran of our nation’s military, I stand on the shoulders and legacy of the United States Colored Troops of the Civil War.

In the past 18 years, throughout North America, I have photographed and filmed thousands of headstones and monuments of the United States Colored Troops of the Civil war.

Additionally I have written many essays of many of these African American Soldiers and Sailors.

During the Civil War, the 62nd Colored Infantry regiment of the U.S. Army, largely recruited in Missouri, set up educational program for its soldiers.

At the end of the war it raised $6300 To set up a black school, to be headed by a white abolitionist officer, Richard Foster (1826–1901).

Foster opened Lincoln Institute in Jefferson City in 1866.
Lincoln had a black student body, both black and white teachers, and outside support from religious groups.

The state government was supportive and provided $5000 a year to train teachers for the state's new black school system.

Under the Morrill Act of 1890, Missouri designated the school as a land-grant university, emphasizing agriculture, mechanics and teaching.

The photography your viewing of me was taken today at Temple University...

I know I always have that Veteran's look, however, this is my Photo-Essayist African American Historian and Political Science Professor appearence...
