Baseball clinches SWAC East Title with 6-2 Win over Alabama A&M

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 10, 2017 The Jackson State Tigers baseball team picked up its sixth Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division Championship under head coach Omar Johnson with a 6-2 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs Friday night at Braddy Field. With the win the Tigers improve to a league best 34-14-1 overall record and an 18-4 conference record. Jordan Bolden pitched 7.2 innings en route to the victory, improving to an 8-3 record. He struck out 12 batters and allowed two runs on six hits. After trailing by a pair of runs after the first inning, the Tigers tied the game in the third inning when Wesley Reyes scored on a Lamar Briggs sacrifice fly to right field and CJ Newsome scored on an error by the catcher. JSU put the game out of reach with a three run fifth inning. Reyes scored on Newsome single. Newsome and Cornelius Copeland scored on a Jesus Santana single. The Tigers put up an insurance run in the sixth inning when Sam Campbell scored on an error by the catcher. Newsome led the Tigers offense, going 3-5 with a pair of runs and two RBI. Santana and Campbell each finished with a pair of hits. As a team, the Tigers scored their six runs on eight hits. Alabama A&M (12-39, 9-13) finished with six hits. Blaine Milam suffered the loss for the Bulldogs. The two teams will return to action Saturday, May 6 at 3 p.m. at Braddy field for the second game (Senior Day) of the three-game weekend series.
