Shian Williams, a communication disorders graduate student from Stone Mountain, Ga., was selected to receive the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.

Williams is among 23 North Carolina recipients who will work in the health field next year learning to effectively address the social factors that impact health, as well as hone their leadership skills.

Schweitzer Fellows develop and implement service projects that address health disparities in under-resourced communities, while also fulfilling academic responsibilities. Each project is implemented in collaboration with a community-based health and/or social service organization.

Williams will work at the National Stuttering Association in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, N.C., to support skill-building outreach for children and adults who stutter.

“I’m incredibly honored to be amongst other professionals who are adamant about improving the quality of life of disadvantaged communities,” said Williams. “This fellowship will improve my clinical skills and leadership abilities. I hope to provide a service that can be the foundation of future research in fluency intervention.”

The North Carolina Schweitzer Fellows will join approximately 240 other 2017-18 fellows working at 14 program sites around the United States, as well as one in Lambaréné, in Gabon, the former French Equatorial Africa.

Fellows have provided service to North Carolina’s most vulnerable communities since the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship was founded in 1940 to carry on the legacy of famed physician Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
