Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 22, 2017 Only 1 in 10 scientists and engineers in the U.S. are minority women. Three female graduates at FAMU are on a mission to change that. Days before receiving their doctorates from the FAMU-FSU engineering program last month the trio got together to share the story of how they are breaking barriers in STEM. Their FAMU experience prepared them to break glass ceilings, including receiving unique training and fellowships around the U.S. and abroad. Renee studied in South Africa, Marcella studied in Poland and Shannon studied in California. While the future is bright for the women, their accomplishments did not come without some obstacles along the way. In 2014, they experienced the loss of their classmate Tarra Beach. They received their diplomas in her honor. The trio agrees that it was the confidence that FAMU instilled in them, as well as support from Title III and Graduate Studies that gave them the courage to move forward, pursue a male-dominated field and reach the finish line of their education. They are ready to take on the world because, as they like to say, they are “Phinally Phinished.” If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
