Congresswoman Adams Statement on the Impact of Trump’s Budget on HBCUs
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 26, 2017 Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement after the administration announced its proposed budget for FY 2018. “Since his inauguration, President Trump has claimed HBCUs are a priority for his administration but time and time again his actions have proved otherwise,” said Congresswoman Adams. “This budget, which includes a $142 million cut to TRIO, slashes $141 million from GEAR UP funding, and removes $95 million from AID for Institutional Development, guts the support programs that build a pipeline of deserving students to these colleges and universities and lacks much needed resources for infrastructure improvements. “Since this administration has failed to honor their promise, Congress must support a budget that increases resources for HBCU infrastructure improvements and contains robust funding for TRIO, GEAR UP, federal work-study, and other essential financial aid programs that enhance opportunities for students.” ### Congresswoman Alma Adams is a member of the Education and Workforce Committee and the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and her Doctorate from The Ohio State University. Prior to coming to Congress, Congresswoman Adams taught at Bennett College, an all-female HBCU in Greensboro, for forty years.
