Public Service: Top 4 Degrees to Work in Governmental Institutions
|
Posted By: Anica Oaks on June 14, 2017 Although it’s possible to work in a governmental institution with just about any degree, some types of institutions have a disproportionate number of certain types of degree-holders over others. While some of these jobs require their job holders to be in the public eye, many of them are in hidden markets. If you’re interested in working in a government institution, here are four degrees that could get you there. 1. History/ Art HistoryState-run museums and cultural centers require employees who have a foundation in history. History museums often employ people who have specialized knowledge about a certain era. Art museums will not only employ art historians as curators, but as PR professionals, docents, and book-store managers. However, a degree in art history also prepares its recipients for careers in art galleries, art journalism, or as antiques dealers, according to University of North Carolina Wilmington. 2. Law EnforcementAccording to Portland State University Online, criminal justice degrees teach their recipients skills like how to look at a crime scene, how to analyze trends in crime, and other useful law-related skills. Online criminology degree holders will get jobs in local law enforcement as well as in bigger institutions like the FBI or as judges in the federal courts. 3. Social WorkThose who want to work with disadvantaged children in institutions like the foster care system usually have a social work degree. In fact, working with disadvantaged youths in the child welfare system is one of the five most common jobs that these degree-holders get. They also find jobs in public health and substance abuse centers as well. 4. Educational TechnologyEducational technologists use technologies like Blackboard, Skype, computer tablets, and video games to create curriculum materials for public schools and universities. Usually these degree-holders have a degree in educational technology, curriculum design, or education, with additional coursework that teaches them how to use these technologies to create their class materials. They also work in corporate settings training employees of various companies. If they work in this type of environment, they'll also take classes in adult-learning styles. Many people assume that they need a degree in social work or criminal justice in order to work in a governmental institution, but truth be told, that isn’t always the case. While it’s true that many of these job holders do work in child welfare or law enforcement, some work in governmental cultural institutions, public schools or other settings.
