5 Ways Civil Engineers Can Improve the Environment for the Next Generation

Community planning to embrace these changes is important to our future. A key concept in this development is preservation of the environment. Ways to minimize the impact of waste, global warming, and pollution must counter greater energy and material needs. Here are some ways that civil engineers can improve the environment. 1. Clean TransportationWith impressive high-performance cars like the Tesla, electric vehicles have come of age, but are still not capturing a big market share. To make this more practical, civil planners must build in more and better charging stations and roadside resources for consumer confidence in transitioning from gasoline to electric vehicles. 2. InfrastructureMillions of people travel every day, with the result that our roads and bridges are in decay, and our highways and airports congested. Traditionally, maintenance is more about crisis management: replacing public systems only after they become problems. Tomorrow's creative civil engineers are tasked with producing strategic designs that are easier to navigate and cheaper to maintain. 3. Rising costs and growing pollution from traditional fossil fuels have inspired technologies for harnessing clean, sustainable resources like solar power or wind, but mostly on a small scale. With an online master’s degree in civil engineering, you can help to promote and integrate renewables to be cheaper and more accessible. 4. Water and WasteCivil engineers are increasingly called upon to implement designs that conserve water so that supplies remain clean and dependable. At the same time, they must plan for the increasing need for waste-treatment facilities to process sewage and run-off so that it can be returned safely to your environment or re-purposed. 5. GeoengineeringGeoengineering may combine several engineering disciplines, but is chiefly concerned with large-scale systems for controlling carbon dioxide emissions or otherwise countering global warming. Civil engineers plan such systems to have the optimal benefit on surrounding populations. Engineers can help the environment in many ways, such as coming up with sustainable building materials, or designing smart building technologies that can minimize electrical use. While other engineering disciplines are just as important, it's civil engineers who plan out the urban environment you face every day. They make the best use of space and resources with minimal disruption to your daily life. The next generation will be growing up in the communities civil engineers are designing today.
