Alabama State University Turns 150 Years-Old Monday; Celebration with Cake, Kids, & Day of Giving!
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 13, 2017

WHEN: Monday, July 17, at 11 a.m. sharp.
WHERE: ASU Football Stadium, Club Lounge, enter through Gate-D, from parking lot behind Life Science Building.

Give online to help ASU's students in honor of the University's Sesquicentennial at 6www.alasu.edu/asu150

Join us and over 300 excited first - 12th grade ASU SKYCAP kids as Alabama State University celebrates its Sesquicentennial - it turns 150 years old - on Monday; at its historic "Birthday Celebration Party/Day of Giving" that is open to members of the Hornet Nation family, the public and the news media.

We celebrate our 150th anniversary as a school, which makes ASU the nation's oldest 'state-sponsored' liberal arts historic black university in America!

The big 150th Birthday Bash will be in the ASU Football Stadium's beautiful Club Lounge and will be complete with a huge ASU birthday cake with candles, balloons, hundreds of its summer camp SKYCAP kids singing the birthday song, greetings by Interim-President Leon C. Wilson, student remarks by the SGA President and Miss ASU and a "Day of Giving" shout-out request by Vice President Zillah Fluker to all members of the Hornet Nation to support their University and honor its fabled past/support its incredible future as it moves into its next 150 years with a monetary donation.

HISTORIC DAY MONDAY JULY 17, 1867
Monday is the exact date of ASU's founding in 1867 by nine freedmen - ALL former slaves - in Marion, Ala., who pooled together $500 to establish the Lincoln Normal School, to help educate the newly freed black residents of Alabama, which today is known as Alabama State University.

ASU has been dedicated to education, research, service and improving people's lives through its championing, promoting and defending the ideals of justice, equality and fair-play for all people.

MONDAY IS ALSO THE 'DAY OF GIVING'
As the University celebrates its Sesquicentennial, we also want to give ASU family members and supporters the opportunity to show their love for the University by inviting them to make a donation and join the Sesquicentennial Honor Roll. This is a great way to honor Alabama State University’s 150-year-old legacy, with a donation of $150 or more. If you can't attend the party, you may donate by giving online at www.alasu.edu/asu150 or mail a check payable to the ASU Foundation to P.O. Box 271 Montgomery, AL 36101-0271. You may also call Jennifer Anderson, ASU's director of Development at 334-229-4950.

GREAT VISUALS FOR NEWS MEDIA MONDAY
We will have over 300 young people who represent ASU's future from ASU's SKYCAP Summer Camp program singing "Happy 150th Birthday" to ASU with balloons, a huge birthday cake with candles and so much more for you to shoot/report on at ASU's huge celebration as a school and as an important member of the Montgomery community, which annually contributes over $900 million in revenue to the local/state economy.

The entire event will last only 30 minutes so get in place early and share ASU's celebration with your news audience - many of whom are ASU alumni and supporters throughout the River Region.
