African Americans Need to Attend Conferences WordCamp Philly, DC and More

Posted By: William Jackson on July 21, 2017 African Americans Need to Attend Conferences WordCamp Philly, DC and More by William Jackson Speaker at WordPress Jacksonville 2017 and WordCamp DC 2017 @wmjackson Twitter #MyQuestToTeach Google As an educator, blogger and speaker I encourage not just my students to attend conferences, but those that are entrepreneurs, small business owners and even community activists seeking to gain and share information. No matter the level of participation, encouraging involvement to attend and speak on the areas passionate about. To share knowledge, wisdom, skills, that learning is a life-long adventure and African Americans need to recognize this and be involved. To be involved in their communities to help them to grow requires gaining, sharing information, resources and building Learning Communities and Learning Networks within the c community that fosters Learning Families. This shows gener- ations that each of us has a responsibility to our future to build knowledge leaders for the future. If African Americans become complacent allowing themselves to be lead the wrong way by misinformation we will loose the very rights, privileges and very humanity we fought so hard for. Those that have influence are those that embrace learning and understand the value of networking and collaboration to build communities that are diverse and connected. Companies and industries are not just built by one person it takes a collection of visionaries, dreamers, strategist, developers, thought leaders, smart creatives and innovators. The opportunity to exchange ideas, to collaborate with like-minded individuals of color and culture and building Professional Learning Comm- unities that build on professional relationships is immeasurable in its power to make and sustain change. The presentation "How To Be Dope on Social Media" is not a cultural relevance, but how to connect with the diversity of community residents related to the integration of Social Media to share information not just the stupidity that youth, teens and young adults are doing online. How to learn the languages, the nuances and be able to effec- tively carry on conversations that are beneficial to building relationships and accept diversity. The presentation "How To Use Your Blog to be a Community Activist" too many African Americans do not think or plan for the future, they live for the moment, do not participate in opportunities to build generational knowledge to tran- sition into generational value for learning and success. Attending conferences opens the mind to new ways of thinking and exposure to opportunities of change and growth. African American are a growing entrepreneurial force across the nation birthed from necessity and need. The availability of conferences, workshops, seminars and other learning/networking chances should be attended and followed up from exchanging business cards, followed by emails and phone calls brings about beneficial business, educational and entrepreneurial connections. African Americans should be building their marketing plans, growth plans, and developing Branding strategies to take them into the future. Parents are many times the ones that start their entre- preneur journey and followed by their children, genera- tional wealth is obtained because of what parents pass down to their children and then to their grandchildren. Conferences and similar meetings allow for plans to be developed that can be put into place that are relevant to what the person wants to accomplish. Gaining knowledge is empowering, but the application is more important because it creates the opportunity to open Marketing and Branding plans that will allow them to be implemented to build wealth. This summer opens doors to embrace the business knowledge and take that leap, to cast away fear and self-doubt. Many times the only thing holding a person back is their lack of self-confidence, self-motivation and the fear of failure. Being a veteran of conferences does not just empower me it allows me to share knowlede with my students, even if they are elementary school age or in higher education at Edward Waters College. We have to share our knowledge, wisdom and learning so each generation can grow to be better for the next one. African Americans must be sure to think out of the box, to be thought leaders, smart creatives, digital innovators even on digital paper for the world to read. To look at nontraditional careers and seek to grow beyond self-perceived limitations and fears. My greatest thrill as an educator is to take students with me to introduce them to new ways to see the world with technology, to network with industry leaders, web developers, graphic designers, venture capitalists, problem solvers, CEO's, CFO's, chairman and chairwomen of boards, corporations and even Mayors. "What we plant in our students and in our children will grow to take them beyond anywhere we individually can imagine."
