Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 24, 2017 ASU's Oldest Known Alumni Dies at 108 in Macon County! - An Elmore County Public Elementary School System Teacher for Over 41 Years - Alabama State University's oldest known alumni has died. Clarissa Black Lee, Alabama State University’s oldest known graduate, a member of the Class of 1931, and an elementary school teacher in Elmore County's public school system for over 41 years, has died at the age of 108 years-old in Macon County, Ala. Lee earned three degrees from the University, which included an associate’s degree (’31), and both her bachelor’s (’50) and master’s (’57) in elementary education. She used those degrees to touch the lives of countless young people as an educator in the Elmore County school system for over four-decades. Lee's association with ASU actually began long before her enrollment in the Alabama State Teachers College - then ASU. As a young person, she was a student at the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Ala., which is the founding school of Alabama State University. ASU just celebrated its sesquicentennial founding in Marion on July 17, which marked its 150th year anniversary as a school. She last visited the ASU campus one year ago this week - on July 27, 2016 - and was welcomed by students, faculty, staff and administrators. She spoke of her love for Alabama State University and about her excitement to be able to return to campus. She was sharp, energetic, and full of the "Hornet Nation" spirit. Lee was a lifelong member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Macon County and the Macon County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Her funeral service was held this last Saturday, July 22, at her home church in Tuskegee, Alabama. The family requested that any memorial donations be made to the Clarissa B.
