How to Ensure Your Talented Child Gets a Top-Level Education
|
Posted By: Anica Oaks on July 31, 2017 It's great to have a talented child, but the talent is worthless if you don't have the drive and discipline to succeed in life. If your child is extremely talented naturally, you may have to be more intentional about teaching them the importance of hard work since things will come easily for them. One way to continue to challenge them is to place them in a school with high academic standards that won’t let them skimp by on minimal effort. Understand the LimitationsA child who is highly gifted may seem to be more capable emotionally than they actually are. Unlike intelligence, emotional maturity is something that has to develop over time. When a child throws a temper tantrum, it can be shocking for parents and teachers to see this otherwise brilliant child acting like, well, a child. As adults, we don't always know how to differentiate between the high intelligence and talent of a child and their corresponding age-appropriate behavior. A top-level education must maintain awareness of the child's emotional intelligence and nurture that development with an understanding of this gap. Enroll in a Gifted ProgramIf your child is truly talented and gifted, it's important to get your child into a program with other talented children. The University of Cincinnati, when discussing their master’s in gifted education online program, notes that it's important to "remove the barriers to their achievement." This essentially boils down to addressing the whole person and not simply focusing on their talent and capacity to quickly absorb information in a specific area. A talented child must be kept motivated and pushed to work hard. Phoning It InThe biggest risk with a talented child is that they won't be motivated in a closed environment. The instruction may be far below the child’s level so the child never learns what it means to work hard. In the real world, talent isn't enough. No matter how talented the child is, the person who puts in the long hours and stays dedicated to achieving their goals will generally win out in the end. A gifted child will often complete assignments with minimal effort because it's easy for them. It's important to guide the child and help them come up with ways to make even the easiest assignment more engaging. Otherwise, the child simply won't have the work ethic to complete the necessary and often menial jobs in life. The Support SystemWhile a top-quality school with excellent instructors may help your gifted child, it's not always enough. The child needs to connect with other gifted children and adults who were classified as gifted. Role models and support systems are essential for getting the child who is gifted to achieve in life. Not all gifted children will suffer from the issues presented above, but by ensuring these needs are met, it's possible to improve the outcome of any educational program. Challenge your student, emphasize the importance of always doing their best work and build a support system that will help your child excel.
