Everything in Its Place: 6 Hacks for Managing Your Stuff at College

Everything in Its Place: 6 Hacks for Managing Your Stuff at College
Posted By: Dixie Somers on August 14, 2017

Nobody loves being referred to as disorganized. Being organized is a skill that goes hand in hand with being clean. When you are organized, you are able to know what your stuff is, where it is and how it is kept. The following are six hacks for managing your stuff at college:

Lock your stuff up

This is the easiest way of managing your stuff. You need to invest in a locker to keep your wallet, cash and other materials such as books. You must never leave your locker open. Open lockers lead to theft especially when you share an apartment with a colleague. A locker also helps you in keeping things that you do not need on a regular basis. It is easier for you to access things in a locker as compared to when they are just piled on the floor. A locker also gives you the confidence of the safety of your stuff giving you time to concentrate other than worrying about your stuff.

Arrange your books and files in order

Use binders to arrange your books and files. Mixing up your books and files leads to confusion. Know how many subjects you have, how many books you have assigned to each subject and the number of files you have. Using your college timetable, arrange these books and files in the order you will need them. For instance, if you have Mathematics on Monday and Grammar on Friday, the mathematical book or file should be on top while that of Grammar book should be at the bottom. Arrange these books in a box or in one of the corners in your apartment.
Pay attention on how you spend your money
Money is part of your stuff. Learning how to manage your money is one of the keys to survive at college. Spend on things that you need and have a plan for everything you intend to buy. Ensure that your money, credit cards, and debit cards are safe.

Do not walk around with huge sums of money when you can keep it safely in your apartment, or in the bank. Be careful on such sensitive information as your credit and debit cards passwords and do not disclose them to anyone. If you have the cash at college, keep it in your wallet and keep it under lock, or just leave it in the bank.

Leave at home whatever you don't need at college

While leaving home for a college in Colorado, carry only the stuff that is essential. Carrying stuff that you do not need will take up much of your space in terms of storage. For instance, if your college requires that you only need to have college uniform, do not carry other clothes that are not permitted at college. Carry the books that you need and if you must carry extra books, have a plan on how you are going to handle and store them. Work on a silent principle of "if you don't need it, leave it."

Keep your room clean

Uncleanness does not necessarily mean that your room has dirt. Your room might be having the stuff you need but not well arranged, leaving your room stuffy and disorganized. Make sure that your room is clean by keeping your stuff in order and where they are supposed to be. Keep similar stuff together and do not mix stuff that is not similar. Keeping stuff that is similar together and in order makes it easy for you to access them whenever you need them.

Have a schedule

Have a schedule of what you will be doing at a particular time. This ensures that you only have required stuff at any given time. A schedule helps you to know what you need and what you do not need. A schedule may also include a list of the things that are important to you and why you need them.
Being organized is a form of discipline. Do not let your stuff be more than what you can handle. Know what you have and learn on various ways of how to manage them.
