What to Do If You're Facing Inequality in Your Educational Environment

What to Do If You
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on August 15, 2017

College should be a time of learning, fun, and success. Unfortunately, many students face unfair discrimination and inequality, and as a result, their college career suffers. Luckily, if you feel you are a victim of inequality at your institution, there are many steps you can take to fix the problem.

Know Your Rights

Did you know that Title IX, a law that is often referenced in relation to athletics, also protects students against other types of discrimination? Title IX covers issues like sexual assault, bullying, and pregnancy discrimination. It is also often cited in cases of sexual harassment. Should your school be found in violation of Title IX, they risk losing their federal funding. It is in your school’s best interest to support you if you feel you have been a victim of unfair treatment.

Speak With School Officials

If you feel you are being discriminated against, go to someone in a position of power. For example, if you feel a teacher is discriminating against you, you might speak with the department chair. They will know the next steps you should take. However, if they don’t believe or support you, you still have a right to continue speaking with other school officials.

You can even seek out the dean of the university about concerns.

Hire a Lawyer

If you need more support than the school is offering, hire a lawyer. There are many lawyers who are familliar with Title IX law and can help you seek justice. Your lawyer will be able to determine if an offense has truly taken place. They can also guide you on the best steps to take next, and even advocate for you should you feel strongly that your school is in the wrong. This is especially helpful should your school be unwilling to work with you.

Find Other Victims

There is power in numbers. If you’ve been discriminated against, chances are you’re not alone. Find other students in a similar position and work together. Where an official might not have listened to one student, five or 10 might be more impactful. Creating a petition, staging protests, and even telling your stories to school or local newspapers can be a way to have your voices heard loud and clear.

Despite precautions set up by schools, you still may fall victim to discrimination while in college. Knowing what to do in the event of inequality can mean the difference between continuing to suffer in silence and creating lasting institutional change.
