Hurt on Campus? How to Recover and Get Compensation
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on August 15, 2017 You go to school to learn. In fact, you pay tuition to attend lectures, earn credits, and eventually walk the line after you earn your degree. A ton of effort is put into academic success so that you can say you applied yourself and attained knowledge along the way. Unfortunately, not many people really create a plan on what they should do if they're injured while attending school. If you're hurt on campus, here are some tips on how to recover and get the compensation that you deserve: Report the Incident and Go to the InfirmaryWhen you make your tuition payments, part of the money that you're billed is called a health fee. The health fee is something every single student must pay so that they can take advantages of the infirmary located on campus. When you're injured, it's important to have quick and convenient access to a nurse that can help treat you. If you can't get to the infirmary on your own, ask a classmate for help or ask them to call security or the campus' Emergency Response Team for First Aid assistance. Fill Out an Accident Report in a Timely MannerIf the campus is negligent for your injury, you need to have a detailed report of what happened on file. Every campus has its own procedures and policies on what must be done following an accident that results in injury. Ask Security what the procedure is for reporting the accident and they should have an Injury Report form for you to complete. The University will then use this to identify hazards and to find out if you were being negligent or the issue puts the whole community at risk. Get Routine Care for Your InjuriesYou should seek medical attention immediately and then keep going to the medical provider for treatment. It's important to keep seeing the treating physician so that you can show that you've been dedicated to getting help to recover. Without this documentation, it's hard to support a claim. You can still attend class while you're being treated so that you're not too far behind. Just make sure you ask for special parking accommodations is mobility is a problem. Seek Legal HelpIt's hard to seek compensation on your own, especially when you factor in the fact that the type of entity impacts the school's liability. This means that a claim for compensation is handled differently for public and private schools. By retaining a personal injury attorney, you can take the right steps to get compensation. Being injured on campus doesn't have to be the end of your college career. If you slip and fall or you're injured some other way, make sure to document everything. With the proper documentation you have a case for compensation but be sure to balance your class work so that you don't fall behind.
