How to Find the Perfect Car for College

Your needs will be different than the needs of, say, a soccer mom or business professional, so you’ll want to find a vehicle that’s uniquely suitable for campus life. Here are just a few tips for finding the perfect college car. Consider Its Fuel EfficiencyIt costs the average person $8,000 per year to own a car. Gas can be a big part of that, so you should definitely ask about fuel efficiency when buying a new vehicle. Look up both its miles per gallon (MPG) rate and what people report about its general fuel requirements over time. You might get differing figures and opinions, so review them all. You need to spend your money on tuition and not gas, so you’ll want as much information as possible to make the most cost-effective decision for the future. Measure Its Cargo SpaceWhether it’s hauling textbooks between classes or loading up dirty laundry for a weekend at Mom’s, you’ll want a car that can hold a lot of cargo. Large SUVs will give the most room when it comes to trunks and backseats, but if you’d prefer something a little smaller for all of those tiny campus parking lots, you can also find compact cars and hatchbacks with fold-down seats that will provide extra room as needed. Analyze Its Safety RatingsThere are two major organizations that test car safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) uses a five-star system that measures things like the car’s rollover rate and side-impact performance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) administers ratings like “poor” and “acceptable” after conducting a series of crash tests. You’ll want to look at the grades of both groups before you entrust your safety to any particular car. Find the Right FeaturesToday’s cars come with everything from automatic locks to electronic stability controls that will prevent drifting and skidding. Not only can these help you stay safe as a young driver, but they might also lower your car insurance premiums if they’re state-of-the-art features that will reduce your likelihood of an accident. It’s worth doing your research into these “extras” and making a shortlist of the ones that could benefit you. You can even use a website like AK Car Finder to find what you’re looking for. You’re a college student with places to be, so buy a vehicle that will get you from Point A to Point B without complicating any of your goals, activities or social plans.
