Science Secrets: 5 Tips for Passing a Microbiology Class

Science Secrets: 5 Tips for Passing a Microbiology Class
Posted By: Dixie Somers on August 23, 2017

Microbiology teaches elements of cell biology, biochemistry, and more from the perspective of microorganisms. It's important to gain understanding of the impact microbes have on our lives to prepare for careers like healthcare, genetics, environmentalism, and others. It can be a very involved subject that some students struggle with. Here are a few tips for getting through your microbiology studies.

1. Participate Often

Scientific courses are often too complex to simply sit back and absorb the details. Active participation is a form of interaction that will create a more meaningful, context-related connection. This helps you better understand and absorb the material. Ask plenty of questions or request illustrative examples. Take part in discussions, and try not to miss hands-on lab work.

2. Take Effective Notes

Writing down concepts and principles not only helps reinforce them in your memory, but provides an excellent study guide. Develop your own system of taking organized notes in ways that are meaningful to you, including high-lighting key terms. Then you've got a more concise and effective learning tool than re-reading entire pages from a textbook.

3. Pop Quizzes

Quizzing is a great way to test your knowledge while reinforcing what you've learned.

You can write down your own questions on the front of index cards and the answers on the back. You could also look for online quizzes, and be sure to look at any questions or problems presented in your textbook. Keep track of your progress so you can focus on areas you're having trouble with.

4. Review the Class

After each class, give yourself a chance to unwind, then review what you've learned that day. Reviewing material while it's still in your thoughts will help you to retain it in memory. Check your class notes against the text to be sure you didn't miss anything. Use internet searches to learn more about anything that isn't clear to you. Be sure you understand everything that was covered before doing any homework or attending the next class.

5. Use Learning Aids

Visual learning is the most intuitive and often quickest way to absorb information. Study materials like online videos or infographics related to your microbiology lessons. In your lab work, get comfortable with the physical tools and equipment you're expected to know. For instance, microplate barcode labeling is often used to identify different samples, and in both your coursework and career such techniques should be something you're comfortable with.
Applied studies are more effective than blocks of text. To make microbiology easier, associate it with something that interests you, whether it's curing cancer or making the perfect wine.
