4 Crucial Laws All Engineers Must Follow to Stay Licensed
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on August 24, 2017 Where society be without engineers? Engineering is essential to communication, solving social problems, and powering cities. If you're considering a career as an engineer, however, you should be aware that you may need to be licensed and regulated. This is because of the importance of public projects to the economy and well-being of the public. In the US, licensing is handled at a state level. Different states will have different standards and qualifications on licensing and engineering practices. In order to stay licensed, however, there are a few regulations that you must follow. License qualificationsTo become a licensed engineer, you must complete at least a four-year degree at an accredited college. A state license also requires passing Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles of Engineering (PE) exams for your field, and a certain level of experience varying by state. When a license is earned and obtained, you must renew it periodically by paying all applicable fees and satisfying any specific state requirements. Each license is valid only in the state that grants it. Specialized practicesA few states issue generic engineering licenses which allow you to take part in any projects or employment across multiple disciplines, such as a civil engineer leading mechanical engineering projects. In the majority of states, however, you have to stick to the specialty for which you were trained and qualified by the PE and FE exams. If you have a masters of electrical engineering, for instance, in most places you may only work on electrical systems and designs. Plans and documentsOnly licensed engineers have the authority to sign plans and offer their services publicly. Beginning well back in 1907, states began making it illegal for engineers to seal, sign, or otherwise endorse plans that they knew did not meet currently accepted standards for their profession. That is now the law in all 50 states. You are also required to report to the proper authorities any situation where an employer, client, or other agency tries to proceed with non-approved or fraudulently approved plans. Code of EthicsMembership in the NSPE and retention of licensure also requires engineers to follow a code of ethics. Engineers may not use their advice or influence to affect the awarding of public contracts. As an engineer, you may not offer financial rewards of any kind in order to secure contracts or employment, or perform work you know to be in violation of state and federal laws. It's possible for you to work as an employee in many companies and industries without having a professional engineer's license. However, it is typically required if you are the lead engineer working directly for outside clients or public authorities. This helps to ensure the highest standards of quality and integrity.
