Mental Health Check for College Students: 4 Signs That You May Have Anxiety

Mental Health Check for College Students: 4 Signs That You May Have Anxiety
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on August 28, 2017

College is a time of many changes. You might be living away from home for the first time, or you may be learning how to manage your schedule without the assistance of your parents. As a result, you might get confused as to whether you're having normal jitters about this new experience or if you are dealing with anxiety. While only a mental health professional can provide an official diagnosis, you can look for some signs that indicate the presence of anxiety.

Intense Fear or Invention of Hazards

Anxiety often has to do with fear. Before you give your first speech in a public speaking class, you're probably going to feel a bit of trepidation. However, if you're going to bed early every night for two weeks because you don't want to think about the speech, then you may be experiencing anxiety. You may also be hyperbolic about how dangerous scenarios actually are. For example, you might check your dorm room four times to ensure that the curling iron isn't plugged into the wall instead of looking only once. When you perceive risks as far greater than they should be, you may very well have anxiety.

Struggles with Sleep

Maybe you miss the days when you would sleep until the early afternoon on the weekends without any interruption. Now, you may find that you can't fall asleep at all or that you can't stay asleep once you shut your eyes for a bit. Another issue may be that you are sleeping an excessive amount. Try to determine the source of your sleeping issues. Perhaps you are afraid that someone is going to break into the room and harm you. If you keep your doors locked and are smart about safety, you may be perceiving this risk as much larger than it really is.

You also may notice that your mind starts to run at night and that you can't stop thinking about what you have to do the next day. Both of these issues can be signs of anxiety.

Problems with Free Time

Many people will grow anxious if they have too much free time; however, always having an activity on your schedule might actually be a sign that you're having trouble with anxiety. Some people who have anxiety like to ensure that they are always busy because the thought of free time actually gives them anxiety. They like to know exactly what is coming next in their days. Allow yourself to grow more comfortable with free time. The thought of making plans at the last minute or on a school night might cause you to have some anxiety now, but if you get into the habit of doing it, you may find that it actually helps you to better deal with your anxiety. Free time can also provide you with the opportunity to explore new activities.

Need for Perfection

Graduating with a perfect grade point average is certainly a grand accomplishment, but it's not a necessity. Keep in mind that you are attending college in order to learn new material. When you are learning, you are likely to make mistakes. Some students view any grade less than perfection as a failure. If you notice that you are constantly asking your professors what you can do to get the highest grade possible, you may have anxiety. Instead, try to focus on what you can do to improve and to learn the material better.

Struggling with anxiety in college can be a massive challenge, especially when you are trying to enjoy the experience. Fortunately, you can find assistance. You might want to try magnetic healing, meditation or yoga. You should also seek the assistance of a mental health professional.
