Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on September 12, 2017 On Sept. 11, 2017, U.S. News and World Report ranked Johnson C. Smith University as the top CIAA institution and No. 18 out of 80 Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationwide. Five Johnson C. Smith University athletic teams won team academic awards, the most in the CIAA for the 2016-17 academic year. The Golden Bulls were tops in team GPA in women's cross country, men's cross country, football, women's indoor track and field and men's outdoor track and field. The women's cross country team also posted an impressive 3.517 cumulative grade point average, which was the highest of any team in the league. “It is gratifying to see our student-athletes recognized for leading from a scholarly perspective on a national level,” said JCSU President Ronald L. Carter. To qualify for the U.S. News rankings, a school must be currently designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a historically black college or university (HBCU), and an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students. The school also must be part of the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings. HBCUs represent just 3 percent of the nation's more than 4,000 colleges and universities, but are almost twice as productive as non-HBCUs with regards to Black graduates in areas such as STEM. According to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, 24 percent of all African-American college students start college at HBCUs, and HBCUs award 24 percent of the undergraduate degrees earned by African Americans.
