3 Tips To Prepare You For Your Kid's Freshman Year Of College
|
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on September 14, 2017 Parents often find themselves fraught when their kids go off to college. Some parents feel like they have a million things to do to prepare their kids, but they aren’t sure where to start. While the situation might feel overwhelming, it’s important to keep in mind that every problem has a solution. The best way to approach any issue is by breaking it down into components. If you focus on the most important issues and address them first, then you can move onto less important issues. While managing kids is often a task in itself, preparing for their immediate future requires understanding your children and their needs. Most importantly, you must equip them with the skills to succeed on their own. As they move onto their college experiences, your kids can’t rely on you to do important tasks for them, or remind them to do it. As you struggle to prepare your kids for college, you should also take the time to prepare yourself for their new adventure. Peace Of MindYou might anticipate worrying about your kid as he or she heads off to college. This is certainly understandable. For years, you’ve probably taken the hands-on approach and helped direct or manage their lives. Now they’re on their own, which can undoubtedly stoke any parent’s anxiety. For peace of mind, be certain to focus on teaching them important tasks, such as time management. Without you there to guide them, your kids might slack on schoolwork, oversleep, or miss classes. By teaching them to effectively manage their time, you’re not only preparing them to succeed in the real world, you’re also reassuring yourself that they won’t slack or miss important classes or work. Such reassurances can go a long way to giving you peace of mind. Accept Your LimitationsAs a parent, you feel a need to protect your kids and to be certain they’re making the best decisions possible. Often, you might even attempt to move and guide them throughout their daily lives. Such behavior can lead to frustration. They often make decisions that might clash with yours, for example. When they’re at college, especially if they’re living on campus and away from home, their new experience will limit or restrict your ability to help them, to guide them. This situation might cause you grief and anxiety if you spend too much time dwelling on it. It’s important to keep in mind that you can’t control everything. You can’t protect them from everything or make certain they’re making the right decisions. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won’t. As hard as it might be, you must learn to let go of certain issues. You can’t control everything, you can’t help them make every decision, and you can’t help them correct poor decisions. As hard as it might be to accept, it’s true. Learning to understand that you can’t control everything can help you cope with watching your child transition to the real world. Keeping Your Life On TrackSending your kid off to college is without question a big deal. It’s signaling a new part of his or her life. While you may feel as if you’re losing something, you should also consider the fact that you’re gaining something: the part of your life you set aside while raising your child. You might now find time to pick up a hobby you’ve been considering. Or you might free up your favorite sport in the garage or driveway. You might even reclaim parts of your home. Even a small act can feel liberating. Throughout your kids’ life, it’s undoubtable that he or she accumulated a lot of items. Objects cluttering your house are certainly nothing new, and they might even annoy you. You should take the time to consider their four year college adventure as your chance to remodel your house—or even to reinvent your living situation. Since college eventually entails returning in some form, you probably don’t want to throw away your kids’ possessions. In most cities you can find storage units, like those at Tysons Self Storage, to deposit unwanted clutter while your kids lay the foundation of their adult lives. It’s never easy sending a kid off to college. In addition to paying for school, or helping them arrange student financing, the logistics alone might create headaches. While you learn to teach them habits that can offer you peace of mind, you should also learn new habits to help you manage your worries and anxiety. Remember, this isn’t the end of your job as a parent. It’s simply a new beginning. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
