The Best Classes to Take for a Technical Career Path
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on September 19, 2017 If you’re thinking of working in a technical career someday, you may be wondering what kinds of classes can help you prepare for your future vocation. Here are some suggestions for classes that can help those preparing for four technical occupations. 1. Civil Engineering TechnicianAccording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), when you’re thinking of becoming a civil engineering technician, you should take courses in math and science in high school. These might include calculus, chemistry, and geometry. If you decide to take courses at a technical or vocational school after you finish high school, you might take classes in computer software, design, and engineering. 2. ElectricianThe BLS says that electricians generally need to be licensed and must usually have taken at least on algebra course in high school. To get your electrician’s license, you’ll have to earn your high school diploma, then complete an apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship includes some classroom training, which might include classes in blueprint reading, electrical codes, electrical theory, first aid, math, and safety. Depending on the specialization you want to pursue, you might also take courses in communications, elevators, fire alarm systems, or soldering. 3. If you want to become a diesel technician, the BLS suggests taking high school courses in automotive repair, math, and electronics. Depending on the employer you want to work for, you may need to take some courses at a postsecondary school after you earn your high school diploma. In a vocational or technical school, you might take classes in diesel technology basics, repair equipment, and repair techniques in addition to hands-on training. Diesel mechanics, on the other hand, may be able to get most of their training on the job. 4. PlumberThe BLS reports that you’ll probably need to be licensed if you want to be a plumber, pipefitter, or steamfitter. To get your license, you may have to complete an apprenticeship, and the apprenticeship program might require you to have your high school diploma (or the equivalent). If you decide to take classes at a trade or technical school, you might take classes in safety, pipe system design, tool use, and welding. You might consider contacting a company like A & E Heating and AC Inc for advice if you’re interested in working in this type of technical field. Even if you’re not sure which technician career you want to pursue, if you think you might be interested in working in a technical field, you’ll probably want to focus on math, computer, and science courses. You might also find it helpful to take a class in computer-aided drafting (CAD). If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
