Cranbrook Academy of Art, ranked nationally as one of the top ten programs in graduate art, design and architectural education, seeks a new leader for the Architecture department. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong record as a professional architect at the highest level in the field, have teaching experience at the graduate level, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a record of success advising and mentoring individuals from groups underrepresented in higher education. Cranbrook Academy of Art has been leading innovation and experimentation in the fields of art, design, and architecture for over 75 years. At Cranbrook, nothing is off the table ¡ª materials, process, disciplines and research all become a site for exploration. This cross-media approach creates opportunities for critical inquiry, rethinking and reengaging with the world around us.

Cranbrook is not simply a graduate program; it is a community of artists, architects and designers, living and working together on a campus that was designed specifically for that purpose. The community is a unique scenario unlike typical academic environments. This unique characteristic is one of the core values that broadcast our commitment to living, working, teaching and co-existing as a part of the educational experience.

The next ten years will be pivotal in making massive changes in Detroit, from a city that conceptually understands the importance of change to a city that implements new policy, sustainable infrastructure and a concern for the built environment into all aspects of our shared urban environment. The vastness of the city has created a bank of cultural enclaves with ever©\growing creative initiatives at play. Collaboration between Cranbrook and local curators, builders, writers and cultural leaders means sharing widely our thinking, inquiry, and energy for innovation. This adjacency to the city should be considered an opportunity for community engagement, large-scale group projects and a variety of proposed solutions for a sustainable built environment.

At Cranbrook the faculty are the singular leaders of their departments. They are given the autonomy to determine the department¡¯s pedagogy and the responsibility for its success. At Cranbrook, the Architect-in-Residence is not a typical faculty member. The academic structure is mirrored across the other departments; the position title changes from Artist-in-Residence to Designer-in-Residence to Architect-in-Residence, as appropriate to the discipline.

During the academic year, September-May, the Architect-in-Residence mentors 15 graduate students in a collegial environment that includes nine additional departments: 2D Design, 3D Design, Ceramics, Fiber, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Print Media and Sculpture. Within the Department, the Architect-in-Residence selects their students, guides the development of individuals and nurtures a productive and interactive environment. The degree program culminates in an exhibition and written master¡¯s statement approved by the Architect-in-Residence/Department Head. Faculty members report to the Dean of the Art Academy and to the Director of the Academy and Museum.

The Architect-in-Residence/Department Head should respect the history of the Cranbrook Architecture department, underscoring its lasting commitment to experimentation and execution at a variety of scales. Conceptual models for Architecture should be characterized by an interdisciplinary, expansive approach that can be used as an open framework for building new visions that will evolve the future of the discipline.

Candidates for this position must be unusually well qualified to provide open, independent learning, resulting in rigorous production, critique and discussion, and inspire research, innovation and experimental paradigms. It is anticipated that the Architect-in-Residence/Department Head will also advocate for the program via digital media, publications and national/international lectures as an active component of recruiting future students.
The Architect-in-Residence is provided with a private studio, housing on campus and benefits in addition to salary.

The Architecture Department is a 6000-square-foot freestanding building with approximately 4000 square feet of open studio space where each student defines their own boundaries by negotiating with their peers based on project-specific needs. The Architecture building includes a separate enclosed area with desks for each student, plotter, 2D and 3D printers, 4¡¯x8¡¯ CNC router and a digital plasma cutter, kitchen, dining room, critique space, spray booth, and materials storage. The Architecture Department also contains its own dedicated woodshop in addition to having access to the Academy¡¯s main woodshop and metal shop facilities that include an industrial-size spray booth for finishing large-scale work. Students also have access to equipment in other departments at the Academy, with a wide range of state-of-the-art woodworking, metalworking, ceramics, printmaking and photography facilities.
