snobbiness at HBCUs
|
Posted By: Ketsia on April 01, 2005 Hey guys, I know this website is created for students attending HBCUs but I couldn't resist the urge to join. Since I've moved to the US from the Caribbean, I've been attending predominantly white schools. Often, I feel that I'm missing out by not having chosen to attend an HBCU. In the past couple of months, I've been researching on historically black colleges and from what i've heard and read, many HBCU students tend to be snobby. There seems to be class divisions within the African American community which I wasn't awared of. I also heard that HBCUs are fashion shows. Students are very materalistic and are very much into their looks. Anyway, I would like to know if these accusations are fair, whether or not the HBCU experience is worth it. Which one of you identify yourself with the black upper middle or upper class? and what is your take on all that? Some of the thing u said are exactly true, but u have to realize that like all colleges and universities there are students whos primarly purpose of being there is not to recieve an education. For the true students that u meet u will realize that they, like urself, want to educate themselves for some profession as well as build bonds with people who have gone and go through the same experiences as them. The connections and relationships u can build with ur fellow african americans can be truly beneficial for years to come. As u can see from this site HBCUs are like a brotherhood and all of us understand that we have something to fulfill by being there. So at least experience an HBCU for yourself. They have there problems but the advantages and experiences are worth it.
