Single Dads: What Going Back to School Can Do for Your Career Potential

Single Dads: What Going Back to School Can Do for Your Career Potential
Posted By: Anica Oaks on October 23, 2017

The life of a single dad can be quite hectic. Aside from having to work to provide for your family, you also need to be there for your kids. As a single dad, your children expect you to be there for them. You will have to double both as their mum and dad. Despite this hectic schedule, you need to stay focused in your career progression. Enrolling for a degree or a professional course offers a chance to advance in your career. However, some single dads find it hectic to add school to their already busy life schedules. Despite the challenges that come with single parenthood, you need to find a way of creating time to get that degree which might just get you promoted at work.

Benefits of Going Back to School
As a single dad, your decision to go back to school can be inspirational to your children who will take it as a challenge for them also to focus on their studies. More specifically, going back to school will benefit your career potential in the following ways:
1. You will have an opportunity to acquire new skills which you can either use in your current position at work or apply for a higher paying position.
2. You will be able to hone your current skills and add new ones which will make you indispensable to your employer.
3. You will be able to add competencies and meet requirements for higher job groups. Upon graduation, you can ask the HR manager to add a copy of your degree certificate to your personnel file which can be relied upon to promote you in case a vacancy crops up.
4. You will be able to specialize in a particular area of specialization. In the job market, generalists earn lower than specialists.
5. You will be able to explore the various opportunities that the job market presents.

Let’s take an example of a doctor whose first degree got him a general practitioner’s job. This doctor can go back to school and explore different areas of medicine and settle on pediatrics, gynecology, dentistry, surgery or whichever field of medicine that interests him.

Can You Create the Time Needed to Earn that Certificate Or Degree?
It is very important for you to count the cost before you embark on this journey. Statistics shows that a big percentage of adult learners fail to complete their degrees because of life commitments.

Busy with Work and Family? Consider Online Classes
Bearing in mind that you have work and family to think of, it might be important for you to weigh between taking a degree program that requires your physical presence in class or enrolling in one that allows students to attend classes online. We propose that you consider enrolling for online classes. There are many universities and colleges offering their academic programs through distance learning modes. A learning institution like Independence University allows students to take their classes when they can and from anywhere in the world. Enrolling for online classes will give you a chance to study in a self-paced manner while at the same time doing your work and taking care of your kids.

Parting Shot
Going back to school has its own set of benefits to anyone who would wish to progress in the career. As a single dad, you can also go back to school and get that degree or certificate that you have always wanted to get. Check and see if enrolling for online classes will give you the benefit that you seek.
