5 Tips for Success in Online Nursing Programs

5 Tips for Success in Online Nursing Programs
Posted By: Dixie Somers on November 01, 2017

The United States is currently facing a shortage of doctors thanks to widespread retirements. As a result, nurses have stepped up and expanded their roles in providing essential care to patients. Thanks to the rise in quality online degree programs, nursing education has become much more accessible to a wider pool of students. While nursing programs can be challenging, careful planning can help you succeed in the pursuit of your degree.

Maintain a Work/Life Balance

Succeeding in an online degree program requires expert time management. Since you’ll be doing much of your course study alone, it’s easy to lose a sense of accountability until the grades start rolling in. It’s essential that you set up a schedule and stick to it. Allot set periods each weekday for viewing online lectures, studying, and completing assignments. You can lump several courses into one day to free up the rest of your schedule, or spread coursework throughout the week if long study sessions seem too daunting. What’s important is that you pick a schedule that suits your learning style and study habits. The key advantage to online programs is that it gives you more freedom, so take advantage of this fact and build a class schedule that works for you.

Bond with Your Peers

Classes that take place on the internet can often leave students feeling lonely. Without the face-to-face interactions that come with the physical classroom, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that you aren’t alone in completing your nursing program. Whether it’s through the school’s web portal, a dedicated forum, or even SMS texting, communicate and form relationships with other students in your online classes. If they live nearby, try to set up weekly in-person study sessions. If that isn’t possible, video-chat programs are a perfect substitute.

Communicate with Faculty

Online technical schools like Southwest Technical College are accredited just like brick-and-mortar universities, so they’re likewise staffed with some of the best and brightest academic minds. Your professors want nothing more than for you to succeed, so don’t be afraid to tap their years of professional and academic experience. Having a mentor is essential to succeeding post-education, as there’s only so much you can learn from textbooks and homework assignments. Asking questions and maintaining a dialogue with your professors will not only teach you more, but will also distinguish your from other students, which is especially important in online classes where most communication is done through text.

Ease into Your Program

Many eager students like to load up on classes early in their academic careers, since taking on more credits means finishing the program sooner. While jumping into the work force as soon as possible might appeal to some, for most students, it’s a recipe for failure. Consider taking a lighter course load your first semester, possibly only attending part-time. This is particularly helpful if you’re trying to maintain a job while pursuing your education, since finding the right balance between work, education, and personal time can take some practice.

Improve Your Computer Skills

Since you’ll be taking your classes online, having a solid base of computer skills is essential for completing an online nursing program. Your computer is your only connection to the classroom, so it’s essential that you have a firm grasp of both the hardware and software you’ll be using. Basic word processing, the merits of certain web browsers, and even what type of internet connection you use can all play a role in how well you do in your classes, so brush up on basic computer skills before the beginning of the semester.

Road to Success

The world needs healthcare professionals more than ever, and as a nursing student, you owe it to both yourself and your future patients to get the most out of your online program. Set a firm and workable schedule and form bonds with students and faculty. With careful planning and a positive attitude, you’ll be well on your way along the road to success in the healthcare industry.
