Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on November 13, 2017 Students interested in training athletes and expanding their knowledge of history can now enroll in Alcorn State University’s two new degree programs. At their meeting in October, the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) approved the offering of a new Master of Arts in History degree and Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree for Alcorn State University. Both programs will begin enrolling students in Fall 2018. “We are excited at the opportunity to offer these two new degrees and believe they will be a great addition to Alcorn’s commitment to providing a high-quality curriculum with flexibility, affordability and success for students,” said Alcorn Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Donzell Lee. Lee continued, “Additionally, data supports the growing need for these disciplines across Mississippi and the nation. Both will appeal to students with a strong interest in careers in education and athletics and want to remain in the state after graduation.” According to information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for history educators is very solid, and training in history is applicable to traditional careers in teaching at the K-12 level as well as the community and junior college and university levels. An estimate of 100 students are projected to enroll and up to 60 expected to graduate from the program within the first six years. The university is commencing the bachelor’s program in anticipation of a mandate to hire athletic trainers at all levels of sports competition. Which would be new to most elementary and secondary schools, the need for many more athletic trainers is obvious. An estimate of 135 students is projected to enroll over a six-year period, with a total of 60 students expected to graduate within the first six years of the program. -ALCORN- Alcorn State University is a premier comprehensive land-grant university that develops diverse students into globally competitive leaders, and applies scientific research through collaborative partnerships that benefit the surrounding communities, state, nation, and world.
