Alabama State University's Band to March in the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on November 29, 2017 The Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets band has received an invitation to participate in the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. This Rose Bowl-connected event is a celebration more than a century old. As one of the most famous and recognized New Year’s Day events in the nation, the Tournament of Roses Parade provides an opportunity to participate in a unique platform to entertain millions of viewers on one of the most recognized stages in the world. More than 60 million people will view the parade worldwide and as many as 700,000 will watch the performance in person. This will mark ASU’s first appearance in the parade. “Our students continue to be recognized for their hard work and dedication,” ASU’s Band Director Dr. James Oliver said. “We are really excited to see our hard work recognized on a national platform, but we need all the financial help we can get to get our students to California.” The Marching Hornets have mesmerized audiences around the globe for more than 50 years. Throughout its history, the internationally acclaimed band has performed in multiple high-profile events including several NFL nationally televised games, Blue-Gray Football Classic, Freedom Bowl Classic, the Honda Battle of the Bands, the Grammy Awards, and the Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. HBCU Digest also named the Hornets the 2015 HBCU Best Band in America. Most recently, the Marching Hornets starred in a documentary series titled, "Bama State Style.” In 2016, they made an appearance in Ang Lee's film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.
