5 Tips for Staying Safe in University Laboratories
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on December 11, 2017 Individuals taking university courses are likely to have requirements for science credits that involve time spent in the laboratory. The laboratory environment is significantly different than other types of classroom work, and it involves a number of hazards that students should keep in mind. Your instructor and assistants will provide important information for your safety, and you should heed warnings carefully to prevent injury to yourself and others. These 5 tips will ensure that you are following basic safety measures in the university lab. Wear Clothing That ProtectsClothing worn in the lab should adequately cover the skin of the arms, trunk and legs to prevent chemical burns in case of spills. You should also wear shoes that cover the feet adequately. Sleeveless tops, midriff tops, shorts and sandals allow skin to be vulnerable to damage if compounds are accidentally spilled or splattered. Avoid Loose Garments and HairYour clothing should fit close to the body to avoid getting caught in equipment. Long hair should be tied back to prevent a hazard. You should also remove loose jewelry that can be caught in equipment or rings that can keep caustic substances on the skin. Beware of Toxic AirMany chemicals can produce toxic vapors, when used alone or when in combination with other compounds. You should always be aware of this potential problem and know the procedure for eliminating toxic vapors that can cause injury to yourself or other students in the lab. Wear Appropriate Safety Equipment The lab will have gloves, goggles, aprons and other equipment to ensure that accidental splatters and other actions do not cause an injury. Use this personal safety equipment whenever you are engaged in conducting experiments, and you will be able to avoid common lab-related injuries. Pay Attention to InstructionsStudents should pay careful attention to instructions when beginning new laboratory exercises. The instructor can provide important information about the chemicals being used and their properties, as well as laboratory mixer accessories and other devices from companies like Arrow Mixing Products. If you are not familiar with the equipment, ask for help to ensure that you are using it in a safe and appropriate manner. A university laboratory is a learning environment like no other, a place where students learn the essential components of what makes up materials in their world. However, it is also a place that can present hazards to safety. University students must always be aware of the dangers of working with unfamiliar chemicals and specialized equipment. If you follow these 5 essential tips, you will be able to complete your lab work safely and successfully.
