MEC Students Learn Skills, Get Jobs at Leadership Institute
|
Posted By: Hija Chang on December 13, 2017 FEATURED Content Five MEC students were selected to attend the recent Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. and two of them found positions through the award-winning national program. The Institute exists to develop students’ leadership skills, create a community of scholars and provide companies access to a diverse pool of student talent. The students are selected from among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI), like Medgar Evers College. Robert Tressler II, a senior Business Major, accepted a job offer with Altria Distribution Group Company as Territory Sales Manager. Ahmed Diallo, a senior Computer Science major, accepted a job offer with British Petroleum Company in Chicago as an IT & S Development Program Analyst. Besides Tressler and Diallo, the students attending the 2017 conference were Carianna Andre-Cadel, an Applied Management Major; Asuma Jalloh, a Biology Major; and Subuola Ojerinola, an Accounting Major. Dr. Maria De Longoria, a Social and Behavioral Sciences department professor, attended as the faculty mentor at the 17th annual Institute. Deborah Young is the Director of MEC’s Career Management Services Office. The office over the past seven years has prepared dozens of candidates for the Institute with resume reviews, mock interviews, dining etiquette, and more. The conference culminates with a recruitment fair featuring Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and graduate program representatives offering jobs, internships and academic opportunities. This year’s conference included speakers from John Deere, Urban Specialists, The Hershey Company, Wells Fargo, Pfizer, United Airlines, JP Morgan Chase, among others. Students who wish to apply for the 2018-2019 Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute can contact the Career Management Services Office.
