Play College Sports? How to Recover From a Concussion After a Hard Game

Play College Sports? How to Recover From a Concussion After a Hard Game
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on December 15, 2017

Concussions can occur at any given time while playing college sports. Fortunately, there are ways to recover from these serious head injuries and get back in the game faster. Here are a few ways to recover from a concussion after a hard game.

Avoid Mental Overstimulation

Returning to school full-time or performing other mentally strenuous activities can be detrimental to the recovery process. Too much mental stimulation in the aftermath of a concussion may bring on symptoms like blurred vision, headaches and dizziness. A study reported by WebMD states that you should also limit your time watching TV or using a computer. Having a concussion doesn’t mean that you have to completely refrain from mental activities. Just be sure to increase your time doing these activities slowly as you recover.

Get Proper Nutrition

Eating right is an important component to concussion recovery. Avocados, blueberries and coconut oil are among the best foods to eat while trying to heal a concussion. The protein and omega-3 fatty acids that are found in many seeds and nuts can also be beneficial. It’s best to avoid sugar, alcohol and caffeine while you heal.

Foods that have artificial coloring and flavoring may also slow your recovery process.

Try Herbal Supplements

In addition to eating the proper foods, taking some extra herbal supplements may speed up healing time. It’s important to consult with your doctor and work closely with a certified herbalist to avoid complications while taking supplements. Some of the most recommended supplements for concussion treatment include ginseng and gingko biloba. You might also experience good results from taking vitamin B6 supplements. These supplements can be bought in stores or ordered online.

Consider Using Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana, or cannabis, has benefited many people who’ve experienced concussions. According to CNN, medical marijuana has been shown to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation and enhance neuroprotective properties. Using cannabis that’s medically prescribed can also stabilize mood and prevent memory problems that are common among concussion sufferers. Many leading medical marijuana distributors, like Elevated, carry top-shelve strains of cannabis. In addition to marijuana in its standard form, these distributors are known to sell cookies, banana bread and gummies that contain cannabis.

It’s important to recover from a concussion properly to prevent additional complications. Progressing through the healing process at a slow and steady pace can elicit great results. Recovering the right way will also allow you to start playing sports again sooner.
