High school students come to SSU for Southern Stingray Bowl

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 25, 2018 The annual Southern Stingray Bowl will be held on Saturday, February 3, at Savannah State University (SSU), Student Union. High school students will put their quiz bowl skills to the test with competition beginning at 8 a.m. Fifteen teams from seven schools in the Georgia–South Carolina area (see confirmed school list below) will face off in the regional component of the 21st annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The NOSB, an interdisciplinary ocean science education program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (COL), is a quiz-bowl style academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean-related topics, which include cross-disciplines of biology, chemistry, policy, physics and geology. The competition theme is Our Ocean Shaping Weather. The winner of each regional bowl will compete in the national finals competition April 19-22 at the University of Colorado Boulder (and co-hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences) in Boulder, Colo. SSU’s marine and environmental sciences has supported the event for more than 10 years, by providing volunteers and recruiting participants from the region. “Volunteers return year after year,” says Victoria Young, marine sciences outreach coordinator at SSU. “And the diverse volunteer base keeps expanding.” The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership based in Washington, D.C. Now in its 21st year, the NOSB seeks to interest students in pursuing a college degree and a future career in the ocean sciences. COL represents the leading public and private ocean research education institutions, aquaria, and industry with the mission to shape the future of ocean science and technology. Supporters at home can follow the competition on Twitter with the hashtags #NOSBRocks and #NOSB18. Confirmed high schools Appling High School – Baxley, Ga. EAGLES Home Educators – Jefferson, Ga.
