Resilience Planning: Building Healthier, More Equitable and Vibrant Communities

Savannah State University
March 30, 2018

The Master of Science in Urban Studies and Planning (MSUSP) program at Savannah State University (SSU) will host the fifth annual Urban Planning Conference on Friday, March 30, in the Student Union. Sessions will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

This year’s conference theme is “Resilience Planning: Building Healthier, More Equitable and Vibrant Communities,” and will focus on the fundamental elements required for communities to thrive in complex urban environments. It will address creating sustainable urban communities that are resilient to social, economic and environmental uncertainties at local, national and global levels.

It is crucial that planning professionals consider healthy, equitable and economically vibrant communities. This requires innovative and inclusive approach to urban planning that will establish a desirable built environment, generate economic opportunities, protect natural resources, promote historic preservation, provide transportation options, ensure affordable quality housing and support a high quality of life for all communities.

The keynote speaker is Tom Sanchez, Ph.D., chair and professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech.

Sanchez will speak on “Smart Cities, Transport and Social Equity.” He will discuss how rapid changes in technology impact critical infrastructure.

Sanchez earned a doctorate in city planning from Georgia Tech in 1996 and has since taught at Iowa State University, Portland State University, the University of Utah and Virginia Tech. He conducts research in the areas of transportation, environmental justice, technology and scholarly impact. Sanchez currently serves as the editor-in-chief of Housing Policy Debate, a leading journal on the topics of housing and community development policy. His new book, Planning Knowledge and Research, was published by Routledge in 2018. In 2012 he co-authored, Planning as if People Matter: Governing for Social Equity (Island Press) with Marc Brenman and in 2007 they co-authored The Right to Transportation: Moving to Equity (Routledge).

All sessions of the 2018 Urban Planning Conference are pending approval by the American Planning Association for CM credits for AICP holders.

Registration

Registration is $50 for presenters and participants, or $75 for AICP participants who are seeking CM credits. SSU faculty, staff and students may attend free of charge.
