The TIME Magazine 2017 'Person of the Year' will be a keynote speaker at Alabama State University. Tickets are still available, but are GOING FAST! WHAT: World-acclaimed Tarana Burke, founder of the "me too" movement will speak at Alabama State University. WHEN: Friday (10:30 a.m.) lecture @ ASU's Ralph Abernathy College of Education auditorium & (12:30 p.m.) luncheon/ASU's Acadome Banquet Room. World-acclaimed Tarana Burke, founder of the "me too" movement, social justice activist, and a 2017 TIME Magazine 'Person of the Year' will serve as the keynote speaker for Alabama State University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Distinguished Lecture Series. The event will take place this Friday (March 16), in two venues that include a 10:30 a.m. - noon lecture in ASU's Ralph Abernathy College of Education auditorium and a 12:30 p.m. luncheon in ASU's Dunn-Oliver Acadome Banquet Room. The cost to attend the lecture is $10 for students (student ID required), and $25 for general admission - for those seeking Continuing Education Units (CEU) for the lecture, the cost will be both the general admission cost of $25, plus a CEU fee of $10. The cost for the luncheon is $50, which includes both Ms. Burke's 10 a.m. lecture and the luncheon. For those obtaining a CEU credit and who wish to also attend the luncheon, the total cost is $60, which includes the lecture, luncheon and the CEU credit. The monies collected will be used to help support ASU's students and University research. ABOUT TARANA BURKE Burke is known for being the first person to use the phrase "me too" in 2006 to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in society. The phrase has since developed into a broader movement. TIME Magazine named Burke among a group of other prominent female activists dubbed "the silence breakers," as a TIME Magazine 2017 'Person of the Year.' Alabama State University was the first college Burke attended as a student. In addition to her many speaking engagements, Burke organizes workshops to help improve policies at schools, workplaces, and places of worship, and focuses on helping victims not to blame themselves for sexual violence. She also serves as the senior director at Girls for Gender Equity, which strives to help young women of color increase their overall development through various programs and classes. Burke was born and raised in Queens, N. Y. As a teenager, she became involved in working to improve the lives of young girls living in marginalized communities. In 2008, she moved to Philadelphia to further her work as an activist. She worked at Art Sanctuary Philadelphia, as well as at other non-profits. She was also a consultant for the Hollywood movie Selma. This year, she attended the 75th Golden Globe Awards as a guest of actress Michelle Williams, and last Sunday's Academy Awards.
