Want a Degree in Animation? 5 Things You Should Know

Want a Degree in Animation? 5 Things You Should Know
Posted By: Dixie Somers on March 23, 2018

So you have considered getting your degree in animation and are probably now wondering what you should expect during your education and after you complete your degree. The field of animation is constantly evolving and growing bigger, reaching new audiences across the globe. With that being said, as you start your degree in animation, here are five things you should keep in mind as you go.

Start Improving Your Skills Now

Are you struggling to come up with unique characters? Are your facial animations looking a bit too rigid? Whatever your struggles happen to be, write them down and commit to working on improving them before you even start your first animation class. Try finding some amazing short animated segments and pay attention to what makes them really stand out.

Pay Attention to Animation Trends

Following trends in animation means that you can look at what other animators are doing and consider how you are going to make your work stand out. This means checking out sites like Rotoscopers on a regular basis, listening to podcasts, and, of course, watching animated shows and films. You should also consider listening to professional animators give speeches, presentations, and lectures so that you know what to expect the market to be like when you enter into it.

Learn How to Effectively Network

Networking doesn’t mean that you have to be a brown-noser.

It does, however, mean that you need to find the balance between meeting people and devoting time to your work. Even while you’re working on your degree, you should be making meaningful connections with other animators. With a projected growth of about 8% by 2026, you should find a relatively good amount of animators to connect with.

Working on Your Degree

It is important to know that many animators attain their Bachelor’s degree from a highly-accredited four-year institution. However, if you want to make a mark in the field with specialized knowledge, have a chance at a higher salary, or potentially pursue a career in teaching college-level animation, you will want to consider pursuing a master’s degree. Of course, if you already have a great job in animation or feel like you are already a self-motivated innovator, you might not wish to consider getting your master’s.

Be Prepared to Endure Long Hours

Animation might look easy enough, but it is not. In fact, producing even a short animated feature takes hours of grueling work in front of a computer screen. Even when you’re not at work, your brain might spend time and energy honing in on real-life forms and how they move. Of course, the mark of a great animator is that they can adapt real-life movements into a digital format and make it look eye-catching.

Animation is a field that is continuously seeing growth, and there are more animators out there than ever before. As you pursue your career, find your aesthetic and let that be what makes you stand out from the crowd.
