Alabama State University Faculty and Actress Tonea Stewart Featured in Netflix Premiere "Come Sunday"

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on March 28, 2018

Film and Television actress, Tommie Tonea Stewart, is featured in a new Netflix drama based on true life events of internationally-renowned pastor Carlton Pearson — experiencing a crisis of faith — who risks his church, family and future when he questions church doctrine and finds himself branded a modern-day heretic.

The film is based on actual events and stars '12 Years A Slave' Oscar nominee, Chiwetel Ejifor as Carlton Pearson, along with veteran actors, Martin Sheen, Danny Glover, and Phylicia Rashad's daughter, actress - Condola Rashad.

Tonea Stewart is perhaps best remembered from her recurring role as Etta Kibbee on the long running, 'In The Heat of the Night' TV series, and for memorable performances in such movies as, 'The Rosa Parks Story', 'Missippi Burning', 'A Time To Kill', 'The Body Snatchers', as well as a scene turning cameo in the 2017 break out comedy hit, 'Girls Trip' with Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish.

The award winning actress has countless TV appearances in addition to 'In The Heat of the Night', including 'Matlock', 'Walker - Texas Ranger', and 'E.R.', to name a few, and is a tenured professor where she presides as Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts for the past 8 years, and prior to that as Director of the Theatre Department for 20 years at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Tonea has successfully run a Summer Youth Arts camp for the past 26 years where young people from around the country come for professional training in music, dance and acting.

The Netflix film, 'Come Sunday' premieres on April 13th, 2018 (https://www.netflix.com/title/80152625).
