The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is seeking a Michigan Medicine Security Director who is a visionary and transformational leader with a demonstrated history of strong partnerships, collaboration, and communication. Reporting to the Executive Director of DPSS, the Michigan Medicine Security Director provides leadership and direction for all security functions in the Health System, Medical School, and North Campus Research Complex and outlying medical facilities in collaboration with other members of DPSS. The Director provides leadership and management for all Michigan Medicine Security programs, including but not limited to Uniformed Operations, Guest Services, Engagement and Investigation, Access Control, and other physical security programs and initiatives; and coordinates, manages, and/or collaborates on crisis and emergency planning and response and follow up, in conjunction with health system and medical school administration and DPSS leadership. In addition, the Director plans, develops, updates, and implements crisis and emergency management policies and protocols for the main medical campus and outlying medical facilities in conjunction with health system and medical school administration; confers with senior administrators in the development of the organization’s long term safety and security needs, strategy and direction; manages implementation for security policies and initiatives and the review and evaluation of their outcomes; and works closely with University partners to oversee, assess and address patient and family, student, visitor, vendor, physician and staff critical incidents and safety planning. The Director arranges, directs, reviews and monitors personnel activities for Michigan Medicine Security, including staffing projections, compensation, staff development, evaluation and discipline for 190+ employees (union and non-union); and provides financial management oversight of Michigan Medicine Security including development and implementation of an approximately $13 million annual budget. A bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an appropriate combination of education/experience, and at least 10 years of progressive public safety or security leadership experience in a complex and dynamic healthcare setting are required. A master’s degree, experience with or evidence of commitment to working directly in support of patients and families and the staff who advise, counsel, and serve these constituencies; a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA); and Certified Protection Professional (CPP) are preferred. The successful candidate will also possess experience managing complex budgets with a demonstrated ability to prioritize both human and fiscal resources, in order to meet changing needs in a fast-paced environment; established leadership competency in developing a multidisciplinary approach to safety and security services; demonstrated ability to create a strategic vision and motivate others; demonstrated experience with regulatory and compliance requirements; and demonstrated evidence of the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key partners, with particular emphasis on communication and collaboration.
