Bowie State University to Launch Newly Installed Solar Power System

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 11, 2018 Bowie State University is ready to launch a newly installed solar panel system, supporting the university’s goal to reduce its carbon footprint. President Aminta H. Breaux and officials from WGL Energy will join other dignitaries to ceremoniously flip the switch to activate the university’s solar power system on Monday, May 21 at 11 a.m. under the solar canopy in parking lot D. With the support of a $150,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration, the university partnered with WGL Energy to install a 1.6-megawatt solar power system throughout the campus. WGL Energy will own and operate the system, and the university will pay for the electricity generated. “It is the direction of higher education to utilize alternative forms of energy,” said Michael Harris, BSU capital project manager. “Bowie State is aligned with the national trend in higher education to implement solar power projects.” The new system will generate about 10 percent of the campus’s energy needs. Harris said that amounts to about 2 million kilowatt hours each year, equaling enough clean energy to power 2,000 homes – a significant amount of energy generated from an on-site power system. The system includes a solar canopy in parking lot D, as well as solar panels on the roofs of the Thurgood Marshall Library and the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex and an open site near the Bulldog Stadium field.
